Assessment of Chiefs' long-awaited star

Defender Given Msimango has provided his assessment of Kaizer Chiefs' latest signing in Luke Fleurs, who is yet to make his debut for the Soweto giants.

For all their trouble this season, defensively, Chiefs have put an impressive showing, conceding just twice in their last seven matches across all competitions.

Amakhosi are also undefeated in their last five league matches. An impressive defensive output for a side spoilt for choice in terms of options in their backline.

Ahead of the 23/24 season, Amakhosi beefed up their defensive options with the signing of Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, Msimango and Fleurs, who is yet to feature after undergoing a lengthy assessment.

Speaking at the club's media open day on Thursday, Msimango insisted that Fleurs is ready to make his Amakhosi debut.

"Luke is a fantastic individual, a fantastic teammate," Msimango said.

"He's slowly getting to where he needs to be in terms of his fitness levels. He's showing it at training, he's working hard.

"I'm very happy for him. I'm happy to be his teammate and I'm happy that he is here at this club.

"From a fitness and conditioning perspective, I think he's ready. He can play whenever the coach needs him to play. It's just that at the moment the partnership that's going on is really doing well.

"So, I think when an opportunity  for him to come in, prove his worth and play arises. He will step up to the challenge."

Chiefs take on Moroka Swallows at FNB Stadium on Saturday. Kick off is at 17:45.
