Chiefs advised on Zungu by club legend

Former Kaizer Chiefs star Mandla Masango has explained why he believes the Soweto giants should sign free agent Bongani Zungu.

Zungu was tipped to join Rulani Mokwena's Wydad Casablanca side and had spent around two weeks under assessment with the North African outfit.

However, the Bafana Bafana international is now understood to be back on home soil and on the market with talks over the move reportedly having broken down.

Speaking on Radio2000's Game On, Masango advised that Amakhosi would benefit from the experience of Zungu.

"I think he has done well, there's a new excitement and Kaizer Chiefs supporters are always attending games because what Nabi is cooking," Masango said.

"You can see that he wants to play more counter-attacks and he wants to try and neutralise the midfield, and that he wants to build from the back also.

"In my opinion, maybe a player like (Bongani) Zungu who is currently a free agent.

"I think he [Nabi] just needs a pivot who can be the link between the defence and the attack."

Chiefs have struggled for options in the middle of the park and a long-term injury to Edson Castillo has further complicated matters. Njabulo Blom has stood out as the obvious candidate to fill Castillo's role but the 24-year-old is still battling with fitness, having not been a part of Amakhosi's pre-season preparations.

Chiefs' frailty was on display in 4-0 demolition by Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday in the quarter-final of the Carling Knockout.
