Mamelodi Sundowns’ top place in the success ranks will be under no threat following their return for pre-season on Monday.
Sundowns’ participation at the FIFA Club World Cup has meant their pre-season starts just two weeks before they play their first match which is why they went straight to Lucas Moripe Stadium upon reporting back.

This is where they will play Richards Bay on August 3 in the MTN8 quarterfinals.
The Brazilians reported back ahead of a season which will also involve chasing their ninth consecutive league title plus football in the CAF Champions, Carling KnockOut and Nedbank Cup.
All of that will happen with Sundowns without any worry of being dethroned from their position as the most successful club of the PSL era years which started just a few years after South Africa’s readmission to FIFA.
Sundowns have won 28 trophies through that era putting them top.
The league title accounts for 15 of those trophies while the rest are headlined by the CAF Champions League, African Football League, and the CAF Super Cup.
They have also won all other domestic trophies through the years from the MTN8 to the Carling KnockOut and the Nedbank Cup.
Chiefs are second with 21 trophies inclusive of the recent Nedbank Cup which ended a 10-year wait for silverware.
From when they went up to lift their first PSL silverware (1997 Rothmans Cup), Chiefs were the dominant club until Sundowns overtook them.
Amakhosi will be disappointed that they have only won four league titles out of their haul of 21.
However, they have also had continental success having won the 2001 CAF Cup Winners’ Cup.
So, in essence Chiefs must win seven trophies with Sundowns firing blanks to reclaim their position top of the success ranks.
How many years this could take is anyone’s guess.
Orlando Pirates are third with 17 trophies.

Pirates have also won four league titles just like Chiefs.
