Ex-Chiefs striker: We had to run naked in the wild

In this edition of My Muti Story, former striker Dennis Vukubi talks all things to do with pre-match rituals during his time at both Kaizer Chiefs and Vaal Professionals.

Vukubi reveals how a Chiefs muti man once took them to an open veld on the eve of a big match against rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.

Amakhosi won that BobSave Super Bowl match 1-0.

Who and where?

"I remember the 1999/2000 season, we didn't sleep that night in an open veld where you drive past Soweto on your way to Randfontein. We had to run naked in the wild while repeating the words 'We going to beat you Sundowns!' Those were the words we'd utter.

"Yeah, things were happening during our time. We were playing against Mamelodi Sundowns in the BobSave SuperBowl."

Why were you doing it?

"Let's face it, we all have beliefs, so in Africa, muti is part of our lives. It's only three players who didn't believe in it. And they didn't even want to be part of that. But some of us practiced these things from at home."

Who was the muti man?

"[Laughs] How I can know that? You are never introduced to the muti man you just take your clothes off and get on with the business of the day."

What did you have to do?

"The only thing we had to do was to say 'We are going to beat you Sundowns!'

"I remember this one time I was still at Vaal Professional, we were hosting Moroka Swallows, the game took place at our home ground KwaMasiza Stadium, but to our disbelief, when we arrived at the stadium, Swallows players were already on the pitch. How come?

"You know what we did? We walked around the Stadium and jumped some gates to enter the field because once you use the tunnel and step on where your  opponents walked you will get burned [laughs]."

What was the result?

"You know sometimes life is life, so whatever you believe in will sometimes let you down. It's a belief system."
