Demands on Chiefs to pile up

Kaizer Chiefs’ fixture demand could come with a further six games in the CAF Confederation Cup should they progress into the group stages of the competition.

Chiefs will be amongst the names going into the draw for second tier competition on Saturday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on Saturday when CAF holds the preliminary round draw for both its club competitions.

AmaKhosi will have Stellenbosch for company in the Confederation Cup while Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates will be in the Champions League.

Nasreddine Nabi’s team will be involved in the first preliminary round matches on September 19-21 and September 26-28.

Should they proceed to the second preliminary round then they will play on October 17-19 and October 24-26.

Then if they come out aggregate winners in that round it will mean proceeding to the group stages.

The first two matches in the group will be on November 21-23 and November 28-30.

Club football will then break for the AFCON finals to be played in Morocco from December 21, 2025, until January 18, 2026.

The first CAF competition preliminary round registration window opened on August 1 and will close on August 31.

For Chiefs, who start their season away at Athlone Stadium against Stellenbosch on Sunday, they are the lowest ranked South African club in this season’s competitions according to the CAF 5-year ranking, which incorporates results from the 2020/21 season up to 2024/25.

The domestic schedule faced by AmaKhosi before the AFCON break will include 13 league matches, up to six in the Confederation Cup plus up to four in the Carling KnockOut.

This could add up to 23 matches before the AFCON break.

After Stellies, Chiefs host Polokwane City next Wednesday then play Richards Bay, Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows before the end of August.
