Baloyi: I don't know why Chiefs didn't sign Zungu

Kaizer Chiefs appear to have snubbed Bongani Zungu, who was announced at AmaZulu FC, with a legendary former goalkeeper of the Soweto giants suggesting the club made a big mistake.

Zungu has been without a club since his contract was not renewed by Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of last season.

'Ben 10', as he is affectionately known, was linked with a move to reunite with Rulani Mokwena at Wydad Casablanca.

However, he was announced by AmaZulu as one of their latest signings on a free transfer.

After leaving Chloorkop, the Khosi Nation had pleaded with the club's management to bring the experienced midfielder on board to bolster the squad.

However, the Soweto giants could have been holding on a grudge - which is common in football - after Zungu rejected them for Sundowns after leaving French side Amiens in 2022.

Chiefs had a bitter pill to swallow as the player was announced in grand style by The Brazilians at a packed Loftus Versfeld Stadium prior to a match against the Glamour Boys, whom they thrashed 4-0 in August 2022.

However, former Chiefs and Downs goalkeeper Brian Baloyi feels the Naturena-based side missed a big opportunity.

"I've said it in the last six months, that's the type of player Chiefs should have signed. I don't know what they are thinking. When you're looking at the young players they have, you need to blend experience with youth," Baloyi said on Metro FM Sports.

"A lot of those youngsters can learn from Bongani and not only that, there's still a lot that he can give. Look at the Bongani now, Rulani even sometimes played him in defence. It shows you he has evolved to become a better player, defensively as well. That's the type of player you need.

"At Chiefs, you need big players, big characters, big-name players. For Chiefs to thrive, you need no less than five big name players," 'Spiderman' added.

The club also distanced themselves from Andile Jali after he left the Tshwane giants in July 2023, after the player also chose the latter over Amakhosi when he returned from Belgian side KV Oostende in 2018.
