Auditions time at Nedbank Cup champions

A bid to impress head coach Nasreddine Nabi and his technical team begins at Kaizer Chiefs Village as the squad returns to commence the first part of their pre-season training.

Chiefs are set to fly to the Netherlands, where they will undergo their pre-season training.

This will also include several friendly matches – one of which has been confirmed to be against Dutch giants Utrecht FC, who announced the match date as 11 July.

"The next opponent will follow on 11 July. The most popular club in South Africa will be the opponent: Kaizer Chiefs. This match will also be played behind closed doors," the club said on their website.

Nabi's men will leave South Africa on 3 July and return on 19 July ahead of the new season, which is expected to begin in August.

Ahead of that trip, however, this website understands that the squad will hold an initial camp at the club’s base in Naturena, set to begin on Friday, 20 June.

The aim behind is to reacclimatise the players back into the training regimen, but it will also give the head coach a chance to assess the squad ahead of the official camp.

Edson Castillo, Bongani Sam, George Matlou, Tebogo Potsane, and Mduduzi Mdantsane are among those still on the fence about where their future may lie.

Additionally, the former AS FAR tactician will use the period to form what will be the side’s core line-up and starting places are up for grabs.

Meanwhile, trialist Mhleli Mabuza is understood to have made a lasting impression during his assessment and may have done enough to earn a contract at Amakhosi.

The Soweto giants will also hope to wrap up the transfers of ex-Orlando Pirates duo Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako, as well as the possibility of Sipho Mbule, with whom they have held talks in recent weeks.

These are just a few of the arrivals expected.

Ultimately, how the pre-season shapes up will go a long way in determining who stays and who goes.
