A striker's take: Why Chivaviro has flopped at Chiefs

Former Kaizer Chiefs striker Phumlani Mkhize says the Soweto giants could be the reason Ranga Chivaviro failed to be the answer to their goal-scoring problem.

Chivaviro joined the Glamour Boys at the beginning of the season following his great performances in front of goal for Marumo Gallants both in the CAF Confederation Cup and DStv Premiership in 2022/23.

Amakhosi beat Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates to the player's signature.

Chivaviro's first season at Naturena has been a poor one though as he managed a mere four goals in 23 appearances. He made only one assist.

"Kaizer Chiefs' problems don't start on the field, the management and the technical team are not on the same page," Mkhize tells this website.

"That's what caused players like Chivaviro to fail to shine. A team like Kaizer Chiefs cannot fail to win four games in a row.

"You look at Chivaviro playing and the confidence is not there. That's because his teammates don't supply him with enough balls.

"A lot is happening behind the scenes in that club, the Chiefs players' body language said it all," he adds.

Mkhize believes Chivaviro's teammates haven't shown much trust in the bulky centre-forward, as it usually happens when a player joins a big team from a so-called smaller outfit.

"What Chiefs players need right now is counseling, that's all.

"I don't think they should release any player this season because none of their players did better than the other.

"It's the management that's been signing players that are not fitting the club's style of play. The Chiefs management allows some of their players to do as they wish there.

"You find a player who is on the bench coaching his fellow teammates and shouting at the coach... and everything just fell apart.

"So, Chivaviro is still a good player. He deserves a second chance next season. We all know what he is capable of. I believe another coach can bring the best out of Chivaviro.

"I like his timing and the way he positioned himself around the box. He is a threat to any defender. No defender likes to deal with such a huge striker.

"Chivaviro is a very good target man, he knows how to read the game, and he can anticipate what opposition defenders are about to do.

"The only thing he needs is a proper supply and confidence from his fellow teammates. I believe he will do well under a different coach."
