CT Spurs coach hails 'fantastic' win over Pirates

Cape Town Spurs interim coach Sean Connor says the players are "really buying into" what the coaches trying to do following their win over Orlando Pirates.

Spurs got their first victory and points of the season after edging Pirates 2-1, where they took a 2-0 lead in the first stanza through Lubeni Haukongo and Jarrod Moorole.

Connor says Spurs lost a lot of games where they played better this season and it's "fantastic" to get their first victory against such a big club as Pirates.

"I said before the game we have the fight, we took it to the last inch, we battled, we worked, we kept our shape, we closed down. Yes, we rode our luck at times," Connor said on SuperSport TV.

"But you know what, this team has played better and lost, so I think we deserved that, from the start of the season. We showed better grit, determination.

"The boys are really buying into what we're really trying to do and a victory like tonight, over such a good club, a big team, fantastic!" he said.

Connor carried on and revealed what was their strategy coming from the second-half with a 2-1 lead.

"We came to halftime in control of the game, yes we probably should have been 3-0 up, I think if we take our chance, it sucks the life out of them," he went on.

"But, look they are really a good side, so we just needed in the second-half to narrow a bit, deny them the space they were looking for from our box and we did that really well.

"And still have a threat on counter-attacks, we probably didn't do as well as I hoped but we still had one or two chances in the second-half."

Connor showed bravery just from the break as he introduced 17-year old Luke Baartman in place of Ashley Cupido and says part of the reason he was appointed is to get the team going back to their culture of producing youngsters and promoting them to the senior team.

"Part of the reason I came here is to try to restructure, bring the club back to it's core values that it has and that's about youth development, promoting young players," Connor said.

"One of the things I did was to bring Luke into the squad and I think tonight and the 30 minutes he showed that he's more than capable of playing at this level.

"I don't want to get too exuberant about him, great potential and has a great future, as long as he keeps on working as hard as he can, as he's doing at the moment," he added.
