The New Zealand international was due to be given two weeks off following his participation at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia, where the Kiwis lost all their three Group A matches.
However, with Morgan Gould suspended for next weekend’s continental cup clash, Matsatsantsa have been forced to call Boxall back earlier than expected.
“He [Boxall] was supposed to be given a couple of weeks off due to a heavy workload," SuperSport United CEO Stanley Matthews tells snl24.com/kickoff.
"Unfortunately, Morgan Gould is suspended for our last CAF match so he [Boxall] will have to play [next Sunday's] game."
The right-back played 28 of Matsatsanta’s 30 Absa Premiership matches in the 2016/17 campaign and made a further eight appearances in cup competitions.
Boxall’s contribution to the New Zealand team in Russia was one to forget after he scored an own-goal in their group opener against the hosts, while he was also at the fault for conceding SuperSport’s second when he failed to clear a delivery into the area.
In the second match of the tournament, against Mexico, he was given a yellow card in added time following a dangerous challenge, which saw the opposition benches clash as Anthony Hudson's side lost 2-1.
The Kiwis then exited the tournament with a whimper in the last Group A game as they were thrashed 4-0 by Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal on the day that SuperSport retained the Nedbank Cup trophy after beating Orlando Pirates in Durban.
Since leaving for international duty, Boxall has missed United’s last four matches in all competitions and his right-back position at the club has been taken with aplomb by Grant Kekana, who has put in a good shift to continue the solid back-line which is built alongside Gould, Clayton Daniels and Aubrey Modiba.
