CAF Confederation Cup match report Zamalek v RSB Berkane 26 May 2019
Zamalek dispatched RS Berkane 5-3 on penalties to lift their first CAF Confederation Cup title in Alexandria on Sunday evening. Both sides rolled out the tried and tested from the first-leg, with Berkane in the driving seat following last weekend's last-gasp win. Carrying a first-leg lead, Berkane made a comfortable start as the hosts struggled to find any breakthrough. The Egyptians squandered a good chance to go ahead on seven minutes, but Youssef Obama missed from close proximity. Zamalek kept pushing for the opener after 23 minutes, but Ibrahim Hassan failed to profit after cutting into the area. Chances drew to a premium in the final minutes of the half, with Berkane preserving their aggregate lead. As the second half kicked off, the White Knights maintained their momentum with no changes during the interval. Zamalek were given a penalty on 53 minutes with the assistance from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), which Mahmoud Alaa finished off coolly. Activities off either bench took place on 69 minutes, with Mohammed Farehane brought on for Berkane and Zizo installed for the White Knights. Alaa nearly sealed a second with a free-header from a corner on 75 minutes, but Ali Mhamdi parried into touch. The work wasn't over Mhamdi, who pushed Hamid Ahaddad's curler from the far side to safety in the final eight minutes. VAR reared their head again after aiding the 89th minute dismissal of Oumar Nemssaoui after lashing out at an opponent, as penalties reigned in to determine the winners. Zamalek slotted in their first two spot kicks, while Berkane missed their opener thus allowing Zizo to slit home the final kick for the win.
