Sundowns were knocked out of the second round to AS Vita on the away goals rule after a 2-2 aggregate scoreline but advanced to the group stages after the Linafoot giants were found guilty of an administration issue.
Vita fielded an ineligible player in their preliminary round tie against Mafunzo which resulted in their disqualification and Masandawana went on to win Group B ahead of Zamalek and beat the Egyptian giants in the two-legged final.
Now, Mosimane is looking to take inspiration from that turnaround - which has often been described as a 'backdoor' victory - after the Red Devils were outshone by unbeaten Simba SC in Group A this season.
"I hoped Al Ahly would top the group, but the Vita Club match in Cairo witnessed unusual things that affected the result, but the most important thing was achieved, which is qualifying for the quarter-finals," he said.
"Last season, Al Ahly qualified for the quarter-finals, after drawing with Al-Hilal in the final round of the group stage and they end up winning the title. Topping the group is important, but it does not guarantee to lift the title."
"History says that recently group leaders get knocked out, Al Ahly is ready for any team and to win against any opponent," Mosimane continued.
"When I won the title with Mamelodi Sundowns, we had exited the tournament, before returning to it due to a management error in another club, and we must benefit from these lessons.
"Football is a game in which nothing can be confirmed definitively, which is what happened in the Champions League matches during the past hours."
The Red Devils host Simba this evening for their final Champions League group clash at the Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo (21h00).
