Official: Vipers declared Uganda Premier League champions as FUFA cancel 2019/20 season

The UPL joins a host of leagues on the continent to end the league prematurely due to the coronavirus crisis that has caused federations to take drastic actions.

With governments enforcing national lockdowns, the suspension of football over the past two months became imperative as measures to curb the spread of the global pandemic.

As a result, FUFA applied Article 18, Section 1, Sub-section C D of the FUFA Competition rules to declare Vipers who held a four-point lead over KCCA after 25 games played, as champions.

In events that a league cannot be completed within unforeseen circumstances, the current rules are in place:

  • Where at least one club has played more than 75% of the league games, the following formula shall be used by TOC to determine the league positions.
  • Total number of points earned from the number of games played multiplied by the total number of games supposed to be played divided by the number of games played.

Vipers will now represent Uganda in the 2020/21 CAF African Champions League, while KCCA takes the Confederation Cup spot.

Maroons, Proline and Tooro United have all been demoted to the Uganda second division, the FUFA Big League.
