Portia Modise, FIFA officer Sarai Bareman challenge SAFA to do more for women's football

Speaking during a media briefing at Maharan Hotel in Durban on Sunday morning before the Jamaica game, both Modise and Bareman changed the mood after praising the team for qualifying for their first ever World Cup.

Modise, who is Banyana's all-time leading goalscorer, made coach Desiree Ellis break down in tears with a moving tribute to the team looking back at where they came from with a lack of appreciation and support.

"I played with five generations including the coach [Desiree Ellis] and we couldn't achieve what you've done girls. You must be proud of what you did, we always wanted to be in this position to change the way we are treated as women in football," Modise said.

"This team has done it. It's about time we see a change in our football, Mr President, we always wanted to have something tangible to show for our hard work. We've made so many sacrifices for women in football and these girls did it for us.

"If we can have a proper development programme, Mr President, this can continue to the next generation and we can qualify for every tournament."

Bareman acknowledged the sacrifices the players have made in making sure South Africa became the 24th team to qualify for the World Cup in France and questioned SAFA on what they have done to appreciate these girls.

"I acknowledge you for your hard work, well done girls, you did it for this country. I know the situation of African women's football, it's a struggle and I believe associations must do something to develop the game," she added.

"On our side we've done something to grow the game, we still want to do more and there's no better place than in France for the big one.

"We need to recognise this team and I asked them if there's Banyana Friday like they did to Bafana Bafana. These girls have made this country proud and I challenge you all to do something in honouring them."
