Banyana issue update on Salgado's horror injury

Banyana Banyana's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Thulani Ngwenya has issued an update on striker Gabriela Salgado following what looked to be a horror injury during South Africa's defeat to Nigeria in the semi-final of the WAFCON.

The continental defending champions were put on the back foot in the first half when Rasheedat Ajibade finished from the penalty spot after Bambanani Mbane was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

South Africa hit back in the second half through Linda Motlhalo, who also slotted in a spot kick after Hildah Magaia was found in the penalty area.

However, the final blow landed in added time when Michelle Alozie's free kick from over 30 yards out bizarrely ended in the back of Banyana's net to give the Super Falcons the lead.

Moments prior, Banyana had been forced into a substitution when attacker Salgado had to be stretchered off after sustaining what looked to be a horrific injury from a wayward tackle.

The JVW star had to be rushed to hospital immediately, according to SAFA Chief Medical Officer Dr Thulani Ngwenya.

"Gabby had a serious injury during the game and was rushed to hospital immediately after the incident for further assessment and management. The extent of the injury is unknown at this stage, and we will give an update once all the facts are known," Dr Ngwenya told SAFA media.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, head coach Desiree Ellis also provided her viewpoint.

"I think from the reaction of the players, it definitely was bad," Ellis said.

"I have not received the medical report yet, but from the players' side, it definitely looked really, really bad because we had to calm them down, we had to make sure that they stayed focused because it was very difficult after that moment."
