Themba Zwane: 'We’re going for the win'

Bafana Bafana midfielder Themba Zwane has assured South Africans that the squad is going all out for a win in the return fixture of a must-win AFCON qualifier against Liberia, in the aftermath of Friday's disappointing result.

Bafana's ambitions for qualifying for next year's Afcon tournament suffered a dent on Friday night when Hugo Broos's side settled for a disappointing 2-2 draw at home against The Lone Star.

The result demoted Bafana to position three in Group K only above disqualifier Zimbabwe. The second leg tie, to be played on Tuesday in Monrovia, Liberia has not become a must-win for the 1996 Afcon champions.

Themba Zwane, who featured for Bafana on Saturday night, believes the squad is ready

"I think as a team we're positive [heading to the second-round tie]," Zwane told SAFA media.

"We're going for the win and we know that we can push ourselves, play our football and take our chances. We are ready for the game."

Liberia will be playing their first international game in their own country for the first time in three years. The SKD Sports Complex, where the match will be played, had been banned from hosting international matches since 2020 but has undergone refurbishments, including an artificial pitch, and recently received approval from CAF.

"For three years now, we have not played at home. The Liberians are hungry, they are hungry. Trust me, before 8am in the morning, the stadium will be packed already, trust me. "The Liberians will be there to support their team."

Kick-off on Tuesday is at 18:00.
