Tshabalala weighs in on Bafana's World Cup absence

Former Bafana Bafana captain Siphiwe Tshabalala has called for unity in helping the national team return to glory after missing out on the 2022 World Cup.

Tshabalala, who is Bafana Bafana's third most capped player, only behind Itumeleng Khune and Aaron Mokoena, admitted that watching the World Cup without Bafana was disappointing.

"It's not nice when we talk about the World Cup and the national team is not there," Shabba said at the media launch of the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge on Wednesday.

"I think we've missed three world cups now in a row, which is not good for us."

Bafana Bafana last participated in the global spectacle at 2010 World Cup as hosts and last qualified outright 20 years ago for the 2002 Japan/Korea World Cup.

The side narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Qatar 2022 edition after losing to Ghana last year in November. However, Shabba believes it will take a unified effort to bring the national team back to its glory days.

"I think everyone has a role to play when it comes to the national team," added Shabba.

"There's an abundance of talent in South Africa but it's about coming together in the name of the national team and making sure that we bring Bafana Bafana where it belongs.

"There were days where the national team was doing well. We've been there before, and we can still go back there."

For now Bafana Bafana have their attention on qualifying for the 2023 Afcon. Broos' side will take on Liberia on matchday two of the qualifiers in March.

Meanwhile, the annual Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge youth tournament will kick-off at the the start of December.
