PERMUTATIONS | What desperate Bafana need to ensure Afcon qualification

In familiar settings South Africans will need to have their calculators at the ready as Hugo Broos' Bafana Bafana aim to rescue their Afcon qualification campaign in Liberia.

Following a disastrous 2-2 draw at Orlando Stadium against Liberia last Friday, Bafana now have it all to do to clinch a crucial away win in Monrovia on Tuesday.

A capacity 22 000 Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium will be the venue for Broos' side that will be handled by Ghana referee Daniel Nii Laryea.

The venue in Paynesville, Monrovia is an artificial turf.

Defeat spells disaster for Bafana Bafana

With Morocco already qualified from the three-team Group K, the other qualifying spot is a straight shoot-out between Bafana and the Lone Stars.

The permutations dictate that Bafana need to avoid defeat as it will leave their qualifying hopes hanging by a thread and swing the momentum to a Liberia side ranked 150th in the FIFA rankings.

Bafana are ranked 67th.

Defeat for Bafana will leave the last match against Morocco at home a mere dead rubber as CAF uses head-to-head results as a tie-breaker should two nations be tied on points.

Both Bafana and Liberia have a single point in the group.

Draw creates doubts

A 0-0 and 1-1 draw will be favourable for the Liberians if they go on to get a better result than Bafana against Morocco in their last group match away in North Africa.

If Bafana play out a 2-2 or 3-3 draw, then they will need to do better than Liberia against Morocco to go through.

Bafana have the advantage of that they lost 2-1 to the Atlas Lions while the Liberians lost 2-0.

Regardless of whatever stalemate scoreline on Tuesday, Bafana will go through if they win against Morocco and Liberia don't do the same away against the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists.

A win seals the deal

To avoid any measure of complications, Bafana must just win today and qualify for the AFCON finals in Ivory Coast.
