Broos reveals what he told Bafana players at half-time to seal Afcon qualification

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has revealed what he told the squad at half-time as South Africa booked a ticket to the 2023 Afcon with a memorable win against Liberia.

South Africa became the fifth team to earn a spot in next year's African Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament to played in Cote d'Ivoire with a dramatic 2-1 win over a spirited Liberia.

The 96' Afcon champions' hopes for qualification were left hanging by a thread after a shock 2-2 draw at home against The Lone Star last week, but two goals from Zakhele Lepasa and Mihlali Mayamabela each, as well as some solid defensive work, were all enough to avoid similar disappoint when the teams met again on Tuesday night

The teams had gone to the interval at 1-1 before Mayambela sealed the win in the 65th minute. Bafana then had to keep their nerve for the majority of the second half to protect the precious lead.

The Belgian coach has revealed what he told the players at half-time.

"We didn't speak about that [the first round 2-2 draw], I didn't want to speak about that," Broos told SAFA Media.

"The only think I said what we need to do, and what we did against in the fist half an hour; good block, being string in duels.

"If there was a possibility to play the ball behind in defence then Percy [Tau] also with Morena on the right side, guys who are very quickly. So we did it, we tried it and I can only say that what we did I defence was fantastic."

Although, qualified, Bafana still have to play Morocco in June.
