Mtawali is a legend both in South Africa and in his home country of Malawi having arrived in Mzansi in 1984 to play for Bloemfontein Celtic before featuring for Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town.
"After some time one of the journalists Fanyana Shiburi is the one who gave me the nickname 'Wire'. Referring to the livewire which connects the electricity and everything.
"I was more of a box to box player. I could defend I could attack. I think that's why they said 'Wire' you know because with a wire you connect everything for the lights to come up you know.
"I think the nickname was unique with the way I used to play as well. Maybe Fanyana saw something that he said no, this guy is like a wire. I really appreciate that he saw that in my play you know."
The Malawian added that it was up to fans to decide whether there was a namesake who equalled his accomplishments.
"It's for the people to judge you know," Fanyana added.
"Because I remember after I left Bloemfontein Celtic there was another player called 'Wire' Nteo.
"But to be honest, as well I don't think it's up to me to give somebody a nickname called 'Wire' it comes from the people.
"It wasn't me who called myself 'Wire', it was the people. It was an honour to use that nickname."
