"I arrived at Chiefs around the same time when Cellphones were still new in South Africa. It was somewhere around 1996 and 1997.
"There were these old cellphones with aerials you know. It's because I was the tallest player in that Kaizer Chiefs team.
"I was taller than everyone, so because of that Nokia phone and the aerial thing they started calling me cellular phone because I was tall.
"Because I was new at Chiefs people wanted to see what is it that I'm bringing to the team and everything was new to me.
"For me, the nickname was a good thing because it was unique, in most cases people would just move around nicknames and call you 'Bazooka' and stuff. Mine was different because it came in at a time when cellphones were just introduced in South Africa, and I was also new in the team."
Mlwane adds that the lack of proper nicknames in our game presently is due to the lack of quality on the pitch.
"The quality has dropped. To show you are quality the supporters and the people at your new club will give you a name," he says.
"It pushes you to work even harder. There are certain players who are nicknamed "Gattuso" and all that. I don't believe in that. You must have your own thing."
