Raheem Sterling Axed From England Squad

On Monday, reports emerged that Sterling had been dropped from the England squad after a bust-up with teammate Joe Gomez in training.

The feud followed on from a heated exchange which took place between the pair during Manchester City's 3-1 Premier League defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.

Sterling reportedly asked Gomez if he was still "the big man" which prompted manager Gareth Southgate to drop the 24-year-old for the good of the squad's harmony.

The Three Lions boss has since explained his decision and stressed that he would not let club rivalries interfere with England's preparations.

"One of the great challenges and strengths for us is that we've been able to separate club rivalries from the national team. Unfortunately the emotions of yesterday's game were still raw.

"My feeling is that the right thing for the team is the action we have taken. Now that the decision has been made with the agreement of the entire squad, it's important that we support the players and focus on Thursday night."
