Cristiano Ronaldo hits back at 'jealous' Wayne Rooney criticism

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has seemingly hit back at former teammate Wayne Rooney following recent comments the Englishman made about his latest spell at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo made a sensational return to United in August 2021, and marked it with a brace on his second debut for the club.

He would go on to score an impressive nine goals and contribute two assists in his first 13 games under previous manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, per The Express.

However, his form would take a massive dip upon Ralf Rangnick's arrival in November as he went on a six-game goal drought, his longest barren run at club level since the 2008/09 campaign.

Some began questioning whether or not he was a good addition to the squad as his age and ability to press, or a lack thereof, began to take the spotlight, while his role in the team and how liable he has been for the English side's misfortunes in this campaign has also been the source of much debate.

On Sky Sports' Monday Night Football this week, Ronaldo's former colleague Rooney said the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's homecoming has not yielded the desired results.

"You'd have to say no (it has not worked), at the minute," Rooney said. "He's scored goals, important goals in the Champions League earlier on in the season, he scored the hat-trick against Tottenham.

"But I think if you're looking at the future of the club, you have to go with younger, hungry players to lift Manchester United over the next two or three years. Obviously, Cristiano is getting on a bit and he's obviously not the player he was when he was in his 20s."

The former Real Madrid star has now seemingly hit back at those claims via social media, with the Daily Star noting that he replied to a photo Rooney posted on Instagram of himself, presenter David Jones and co-host Jamie Carragher on Monday Night Football.

In a short message, Ronaldo commented: "Two jealous", accompanied by a "raised eyes" emoji.

This has led to suggestions this brief response was a reference to Rooney's comments about his United return.

With the Red Devils currently seventh on the Premier League log and desperate for UEFA Champions League football next season, their next match is away at Everton on Saturday, and a win there is vital for Ronaldo and company.
