Newcastle end Arsenal's Carabao Cup journey

Arsenal crashed out of the Carabao Cup after a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

The Gunners boss Mikel Arteta named the same eleven that annihilated Manchester City on Sunday, as the host featured in-form Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Jacob Murphy.

Isak looked to have given the host the perfect start with a solid finish in the top corner, but he had gone too early following a review and saw his effort disallowed for offside.

Arsenal eventually fell behind midway inside the first half as Isak's left-footed shot from close-range hit the upright and fell kindly for Murphy to roll in the far corner.

The visiting team were keen to get back in the overall tie and came close through a point-blank strike by Leandro Trossard, but goalkeeper Martin Dubravka repelled him.

Brazilian-born Gabriel Martinelli couldn't finish the match thus required the Gunners to replace him with rising star Ethan Nwaneri who bagged a cracker over City.

Arsenal still found the going tough in the second half when Saliba conceded possession to Gordon, who curled wide from a gaping goal with goalkeeper David Raya in no man's land.

The aggressive press by the Magpies paid off as Fabian Schar nudged Raya's pass from the foot of Declan Rice into the path of to Gordon to roll in the bottom-corner.

It became relatively one-sided from here onwards, with the Gunners providing little of a threat to the Magpies who were well ahead in this two-legged affair.

Myles Lewis-Skelly looked to give the visitors a consolation through a header from a corner, but he went wide of target as the Magpies held on for the win on the night to secure their spot in the final for the second time in three seasons.
