Valencia trio could return for Euro 2008

Los Che have been dreadful this season both domestically and in Europe and many have believed that it was down to a lack of discipline on the part of the players.

Mid-season managerial appointment Ronald Koeman controversially sacked three players: Miguel Angel Angulo, goalkeeper Santiago Canizares and club captain David Albelda.

The move appeared to do Los Che no favours, as their form continued to plummet and Koeman, despite winning the Copa del Rey, was sacked for his side’s incredibly poor league form which sees them as relegation candidates.

The final nail in his coffin proved to be a 5-1 mauling at the hands of Athletic Bilbao this weekend, and with Koeman out, the trio are back in. However, having spent so much of the season out of football, many feel their chances of making the trip to Euro 2008 with La Furia Roja is unlikely.

However, the Spanish boss asserted the experienced trio may be in Austria-Switzerland this summer if they continue to do well from now until the end of the season - with just five games being left to play.

“It all depends on how they play from now on,” Aragones said.

“The players will pick themselves, it’s down to them, they have to be in good shape, tactically, physically and mentally.

“I just hope Valencia begins to do well as they have three great players in their team.”

Aragones revealed those who are dead certainties to make the final 23 man squad come June, hailing world class talents Fernando Torres now of Liverpool and a product of Luis' favourite club Atletico Madrid, Barcelona captain Carles Puyol and Real Madrid's Iker Casillas.

Players such as Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas and Valencia star David Villa were not fortunate enough to receive specific praise, but are equally certain to make the trip, fitness pending, along with the likes of Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos and Barcelona playmaker Xavi.

“Fernando Torres is one of the best forwards I have ever seen and probably one of the best ever Spanish strikers.

“Puyol is a great defender, he has always been a part of this group and it’s necessary for him to play.

“Spain has three or four great goalkeepers but Casillas is always the number one.”

The coach also believes that his side can win the competition but he admits that it will not be easy.

“As coach I believe that we can win the Euro’s, we will go there to win but it will be difficult because there are some difficult teams that we will be playing.”

Spain have been drawn in group D and their campaign kicks off on June 10th against Russia and then they play Sweden followed by Greece.
