The Premiership’s Chief Operations Officer Ronnie Schloss disclosed to snl24.com/kickoff that the Reserve League which proved to be great success last season, is set to start soon.
"Definitely it’s going to take place, but at the moment I don’t have the documents with me containing the date that it will kick off,” he said.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ third-choice goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane has already told snl24.com/kickoff that the absence of a Reserve League is impacting negatively on players who are warming the bench at their clubs, or recovering from injury.
“The Reserve League was a noble programme by the PSL, and it was great for players like me, who are not regulars in the first team. It enabled us to keep in shape and improve our prospects of breaking into our respective teams’ starting eleven,” the Under-23 international said.
The former Amajita captain has not kept goal for the Brazilians’ first team since joining the Chloorkop outfit from Bidvest Wits juniors. He was, however, a regular in the reserve team, although the team failed to emulate their first team counterparts last season, finishing in the lower ranks of the League.
The PSL introduced the Reserve League last season at the request of Bafana Bafana coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.
The veteran Brazilian-born mentor argued that the absence of such a league was scuttling the long term development of the game locally.
It started as a pilot project that involved teams from Gauteng only, but was scheduled to be a national league this season.
Orlando Pirates are the League’s reigning champions.
