Mngqithi takes Sundowns head on

In what could read as a script from a movie scene, Manqoba Mngqithi's first task at Golden Arrows will come against his former employers Mamelodi Sundowns.

This match will roll out as soon as Wednesday (19:30) at Mpumalanga Stadium, Hammarsdale, by which time Mngqithi will have had two sleeps since his reappointment as the head coach of Arrows.

It has been 11-and-a-half years since Mngqithi was last at the KZN outfit and through that time only ever worked at Sundowns as an assistant coach, co-coach, senior coach, and head coach, going through all types of emotions.

While he was shown the door last December at Chloorkop, the timing of the start of his new job is perfectly timed for The Brazilians' visit to KwaZulu-Natal.

Arrows have their own list of concerns, which have left them in the bottom half, and must now gather points to aid their rise in the standings.

Mngqithi has that task in what will be his third spell at Abafana Bes'thende.

It was at Arrows where he got his break at this level and now comes back having grown in status based on all the experience gained at Sundowns.

Nine league titles, the CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup, African Football League, Nedbank Cup (thrice), Telkom Knockout (twice), and MTN8 (once) all count as winners' medals won under employment at the Tshwane giants.

The subplot of Mngqithi going up against Sundowns in his first game will be interesting regardless of the result.

He made way at Sundowns with the champions top of the Betway Premiership standings but having lost in the Carling Knockout final, come stuck in the MTN8 semi-finals, and without a win in the opening two games of the CAF Champions League group stage.
