Gallants pip Durban City to NBK Cup semi-finals

Marumo Gallants booked their spot in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals following a penalty shoot-out win over Durban City on Sunday afternoon.

Gallants restored Thapelo Mokobodi and Daniel Msendami after the loss to Stellenbosch FC, while Ghanaian Victor Bakah was the hosts' sole survivor from the Hungry Lions win.

It took time for matters to get going, but the host had the first scare when Bongumusa Nkosi snapped a half-volley from the area well over target.

For large spells though the match lacked rhythm and all-round intensity before Msendami curled past the far post after pulling a cutback.

The Team of Choice finished the half relatively strong, with Nkosi and Menzi Ndwandwe keen to rattle the net but to no avail after firing well off target.

However, the tight set of affairs continued in the second exchanges before Msendami slammed a low shot from way out narrowly beyond the bottom-corner.

City made a double substitution a little later where Sanele Gaxa made way for Samkelo Maseko and Ruzaigh Gamildien came on for Luvuyo Phewa.

Gamildien got a chance to open the deadlock off a forward pass by Saziso Magawana, but he failed to hit first-time from a tight angle.

The Team of Choice continued having the lion share of chances late on, but failed to get past Kagiso Mlambo and extra-time followed up.

Marumo missed a big chance a minute in extra-time when Rewaldo Prins snapped a cross-field ball from the right against the top of the woodwork.

As the lack of goals continued, Marumo were victorious in the shoot-out as Mlambo made two saves whilst Masindi Nemtanjela netted the winning effort.
