Taarabt, 30, is widely considered as one of the North African nations' most gifted playmakers in recent times but his career has been blighted by indiscipline.
Since bursting onto the scene with QPR in England back in 2009, Taarabt has endured a rather underwhelming career and bizarrely made his Benfica debut in March this year - after initially joining the club in 2015.
However, his recent emergence back into the club's first-team has put him back into the reckoning for the Atlas Lions in Halilhodzic's first squad.
The 27-man list selected was cut from a 46-man training squad ahead of their games against Burkino Faso and Niger in early September.
Standard Liege winger Mehdi Carcella, Achraf Hakimi, Noussair Mazraoui and Youssef En-Nesyri are amongst the notable absentees.
Although the young trio from AFC Ajax, Borussia Dortmund and Leganes respectively, have been included in the U23 squad that are preparing for the 2020 Olympics qualifiers.
As was the case in Halilhodzic's memorable stint with Algeria, the Bosnian tactician has dropped the major stalwarts of the national team, that can be viewed in the gallery above.
