Man City overtake Arsenal with big win

Manchester City leapfrogged Arsenal into top spot after defeating Luton Town 5-1 in Premier League action on Saturday afternoon.

Ederson, Jeremy Doku, Julian Alvarez, Manuel Akanji, Rico Lewis and Matheus Nunes all earned recalls to the the Citizens line-up following the UEFA Champions League action in midweek.

The home side just needed a minute to find the breakthrough when Erling Haaland's acrobatic effort deflected off Daiki Hashioka on its way into the top corner.

The woodwork came to Luton's rescue after 27 minutes when Nunes latched onto a through-ball from Kevin de Bruyne and unleashed a low strike that was kept out by the far post.

While Luton struggled to carve out chances, City would have went into the halftime break quite frustrated after failing to increase their advantage in the first half despite dominating all the possession.

Luton's resistance did break again on 63 minutes and it took something spectacular to double the lead, with Mateo Kovavic finding the top corner with a well-taken first-time volley.

The third goal would arrive in the 75th minute when Haaland calmly dispatched a penalty after  Wilfred Onyedinma had fouled Doku in the area. the Man City striker has now scored 20 league goals this campaign.

There would be no clean sheet for the home side as Ross Barkley bagged a consolation goal for Luton with ten minutes remaining, after a fine individual run that ended with a neat finish.

However, City did get a fourth goal in the 87th minute as Doku got his name on the score-sheet with a lovely run and finish in the box to wrap up a big win for the defending champions.

The fifth goal arrived in second-half stoppage time as defender Joško Gvardiol saved the best for last with a lovely strike from the edge of the box.
