Riveiro issues injury update on Bucs' key player

Head coach Jose Riveiro has provided an update on the injury of goalkeeper Sipho Chaine who had to be replaced during Orlando Pirates' 7-1 thrashing of Lamontville Golden Arrows.

The Buccaneers return to winning form in thrilling fashion thanks to a Tshegofatso Mabasa hattrick while Kabelo Dlamini, Sandile Mthethwa, Karim Kimvuidi and Relebohile Mofokeng also grabbed one goal each to add to the eye-watering scoreline.

Arrows pulled a consolation goal through in-form striker Lungelo Nguse.

For their victory though, The Soweto giants also have some injury concerns of their own, as shot-stopper Chaine has to be replaced by Mpontshane after experiencing some discomfort in the 54th minute of the match.

Speaking to media after the match, Riveiro could not provide assurance that the 26-year-old would be ready for Saturday's quarter-final clash against AmaZulu in the Nedbank Cup.

"It's early to say [how serious the injury is]," Riveiro responded when asked about Chaine's injury.

"I don't really know [for sure]. There was a discomfort in his leg but honestly, I cannot tell you how serious it's going to be.

"He could have continued a little bit more if we wanted but we didn't want to take the risk. There's no reason. Not because of the results.

"So let's see in the next 24 hours how serious the injury is but I cannot really tell you because I have not had the opportunity to speak to the doctors yet."

Chaine has served as The Buccaneers' number choice this season and his absence would undoubtedly come as a blow.

However, Riveiro is still inundated with plenty of options at the back in Melusi Buthelezi, Richard Ofori and Mpontshane all available for selection.
