Kevin Keagan recruit: ‘I would be interested in the Chiefs job’

Former Newcastle United winger Nikodimos 'Nikki' Papavasiliou has raised a hand of interest in speaking out on the Kaizer Chiefs job.

Chiefs are back on the market yet again for a man to take over next season and have had widespread interest from South America and Europe.

Through all that, Papavasiliou has taken interest.

Papavasiliou is a UEFA Pro Licence holder who has worked with clubs in Greece, Slovakia, Cyprus and Egypt but lives in Prague, Czech Republic.

His most recent job was in Egypt with National Bank of Egypt.

The 53-year-old was the first Cypriot to ever play in the English Premier League after signing for Newcastle United when they had Kevin Keagan as coach in the 1993/94 season.

"Kaizer Chiefs is a name that is attractive to any coach keen to work in Africa like me," Papavasiliou tells KickOff.com.

"This is a club with a project that I would like to look at because it is of interest to me just like I expect it is to many other coaches.

"It also comes with understanding the vision behind the project before taking the opportunity.

"It is a massive club that I see as a challenge to any coach keen on the job.

"I'm interested in the Chiefs job, but that will come with hearing from the relevant people first.

"The nature of the coaching space is that whenever there is an opportunity, there will be interest.

"Beyond this being an attractive opportunity, there is also the need to understand the vision.

"You don't just go anywhere just because there is a chance to coach.

"I hear they haven't won a trophy for almost 10 years, so this makes it an even better challenge to embrace.

"Whoever gets that job next will have the opportunity to end this long period of not winning trophies.

"I have worked in Africa, so I understand there will always be a lot of different dynamics and politics at every club, so this is nothing new to me.

"It is your job to manage all these things because coaching is not only what you do at training," says Papavasiliou, who is close to Gavin Hunt and Pitso Mosimane.

"Pitso is a good buddy of mine in the industry having worked in the same space with him in Egypt.

"With Gavin, we did one of the courses together, so we have a great bond, and we still speak whenever we can.

"I had a lot of talks with Gavin since the time we met just after I had stopped playing football.

"Since I was still in good shape, he wanted me to be a player-assistant coach at his club, but I turned down the opportunity because I was done playing.

"He liked my left foot, but I had problems with my knee, and my mind was now only focused on coaching.

"We have remained in contact since then," says Papavasiliou.
