‘Chiefs will restore their glory under this coach’

The mere mention of Vanderlei Luxemburgo as a possible option for the Kaizer Chiefs head coach job has suddenly created intense debate in Brazil.

Luxemburgo will probably have one of the strongest CVs of the options that the Soweto giants will have on their table.

This is a man who has held two of the most important coaching jobs in the global game – that of Spanish giants Real Madrid and the Brazil national team.

From coaching Ronaldo, Zinedane Zidane, David Beckham, Roberto Carlos and Luis Figo at Madrid, Luxemburgo has been with Vasco da Gama, Flamengo, Palmeiras, Santos, Cruzeiro, Gremio, Fluminense, Vasco da Gama and Corinthians in Brazil.

The 71-year-old worked at Corinthians until as recently as September 2023.

Unknown to many is the fact that Luxemburgo is known to club supremo Kaizer Motaung having almost signed for Chiefs as a player back in 1980.

The proposed deal fell through due to an injury that eventually brought Luxemburgo's playing career to an end.

In the meanwhile, Chiefs' links with Luxemburgo have come as a shock.

"I'm surprised to hear Luxemburgo being linked with Kaizer Chiefs," says former Moroka Swallows defender Vinicius da Silva, who is Brazilian.

"This is a coach who was at Corinthians last year and here we are talking about a Brazilian Serie A club and not Serie D.

"When you are at Corinthians, we are talking about salaries that can go up to 500 000 Brazilian Real (approx. R1,8 million).

"This is massive money even here in Brazil.

"For him to be interested in the Chiefs job will not be about money or wanting to improve his CV.

'Chiefs will restore their glory days with this coach.

"This man has made enough money in his career and got even more money when his contract was cut with months to go.

"When Corinthians separated with him, he got 1 million Brazilian Real (approx. R3,74 million), so he is someone who doesn't need money.

"Chiefs can never give him that which he has never had in his career.

"I would have thought that he would stay here and wait for another job, maybe in Serie B at worst.

"But then I don't talk to him and never worked under him, so I don't know what he has in mind as a coach who has been around for a long time.

"A player or coach moving from the Brazilian Serie A or B to South Africa is something that I have never imagined.

"What I know about him is that he is very good in assembling a squad.

"He has a special eye for identifying players that will fit into his style of playing.

"I don't know what will happen in an environment where he doesn't know the players.

"He is an old-school coach who is firm and cannot be disrespected by anyone.

"I don't know how it will work, but then this is football," says Da Silva.

Chiefs had interviews with another Brazilian coach, Alexandre Gallo, last year.

Gallo was contacted by the Naturena-based outfit late last year and had a conference call with the club authorities with regards to the job.

However, the talks haven't been fruitful, with Gallo continuing with his job at Brazilian club Santos in Sao Paulo, where he works as the technical manager.

Chiefs are expected to make a coaching change for the fifth consecutive off-season with Cavon Johnson currently standing in as caretaker coach.
