OFFICIAL: Record €90m Man City signing confirmed

Manchester City have now confirmed their second signing for the 2023/24 season, who becomes the most expensive defender ever at a stunning €90 million (R1.8 billion).

The reigning UEFA Champions League winners have announced the arrival of defender Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig.

With the 21-year-old having agreed personal terms with City last month, the two clubs finally reached an agreement on a fee for the the left-footed centre-back this week, with his €90 million price tag surpassing that of Harry Maguire's €87 million (R1.7 million) switch to Manchester United from Leicester City in 2019.

He thus becomes the second new signing at the Etihad in this window, joining his Croatia teammate Mateo Kovacic, who moved to the EPL champions from Chelsea in July.

Having joined the Red Bull club in 2021 from Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb, Gvardiol won two successive German Super Cup titles and was named in the 2022/23 Bundesliga Team of the Season, while he also impressed at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
