Rulani slams opposition teams

Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Rulani Mokwena has slammed opposition teams for disrupting the flow of matches.

Sundowns retained their spot at the top of the DStv Premiership table with a 2-1 win over Durban outfit Lamontville Golden Arrows on Saturday but co-head coach Rulani Mokwena left than impressed.

"The challenge we have now in our games, the biggest challenge is that we are responsible for the intensity of the game and those games are very difficult when one team, of the two, is responsible for the intensity of the game and the tempo," lamented Mokwena.

"Because the last three, or even four teams [we faced] come to disrupt. And then it becomes a little bit difficult to have a football match and then it looks a bit like Sundowns is not playing well. But the reality is that Sundowns is the only one trying to have a football match.

"With everything else, there's stoppages, there's time-wasting, there's fouls, there's goal kicks and throw-ins that take too long."

Mokwena's words echo the same sentiments made by Sundowns co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi where he accused premiership teams of time-wasting following a hard-fought 1-0 win against Chippa United.

"Time-wasting is playing a big role and if we can check the time at which we are playing in 90 minutes. We are averaging 43 minutes each half where the ball is in play," Mngqithi said.

"If you look at how tired Chippa were in the first half, but if you were to count how many minutes the ball was in play, you would realize that we are cheating our football."

Sundowns' next challenge is on Sunday with a clash against AmaZulu, who fell to Chippa United on Saturday.
