UEFA Champions League Wrap

Liverpool advance to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League despite a 1-0 loss to Inter Milan in the second leg of their last 16 tie at Anfield.

The Reds made four changes to the side that narrowly beat West Ham United, as they recalled Joel Matip, Thiago, Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota while Nicolo Barella was suspended for Inter.

Inter had a quick start, pressing Liverpool high but they could not create clear chances and the Reds nearly broke the deadlock from a set-piece on the half-hour mark after Matip crashed the crossbar with a header from Trent Alexander-Arnold's free-kick.

Jurgen Klopp's men had a bright start in the second stanza, as Salah was denied the opener by the frame of goal in the early stages.

However, Lautaro Martinez broke the deadlock for the visitors and pulled a goal back on aggregate on the hour-mark with an unstoppable strike from a diagonal angle outside the box that found the top corner.

Inter were reduced to ten men moments later after Alexis Sanchez got a second booking and was sent off for a lunging tackle on Thiago.

Salah hit the post again for the Reds 13 minutes before time, but it did not come back to haunt the Reds, who did enough to advance to the next round.

Bayern Munich booked their spot in the quarter-finals with an 8-2 aggregate win after trouncing RB Salzburg 7-1 in the second leg at Allianz Arena.

Bayern made three alterations to the side that was held by Bayer Leverkusen, as goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Leroy Sane and Lucas Hernandez returned.

The Bavarians had a perfect start after they were awarded a penalty in the 12th minute for a foul on Robert Lewandowski and the Polish striker made no mistake from the spot-kick, as he sent goalkeeper Phillip Kohn the wrong way.

The hosts had another penalty in the 21st minute given by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) after another clumsy challenge on Lewandowski and the towering forward doubled Bayern's lead and got his brace.

Julian Nagelsmann's charges were 3-0 up just two minutes later after Lewandowski completed his hat-trick with a strike into an empty net from a rebound after his initial deflected shot came off the post.

Serge Gnabry made it 4-0 on the half-hour mark with a strike at the back post after he was picked out by Kingsley Coman and Thomas Muller made it 5-0 early in the second stanza with strike in the box.

Maurits Kjaergaard got a consolation goal for Salzburg with a strike into the top corner 20 minutes before time but the Bavarians ran riot, as Muller made it 6-1and completed his brace and Sane made it 7-1 in the dying minutes.
