UEFA Champions League wrap

Anthony Elanga came off the bench to rescue a draw for Manchester United in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last 16 tie at Atletico Madrid.

United interim manager Ralf Rangnick named three changes in Fred, Raphael Varane and Marcus Rashford, with Atleti installing Geoffrey Kondogbia, Renan Lodi and Angel Correa.

Diego Simeone's men hit the ground running as early as the seventh minute through a stunning diving header in the area from Joao Felix.

Atleti looked to add a second before the halftime period, but Sime Vrsjalko's header bounced off Victor Lindelof and onto the woodwork.

Ralf Rangnick looked to his bench once again and threw on the likes of Alex Telles, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Nemanja Matic and Elanga.

The Red Devils continued to hang on following the second half and cancelled the home side's front foot through a composed bottom corner finish from Elanga.

Simeone's side almost bagged the winner with minutes to go, but Antoine Griezmann curled against the woodwork and had the match end all square.

Here are the best-paid players in this season's Champions League

Ajax Amsterdam were pushed to the edge and in the end settled for a 2-2 draw in their Champions League last 16 first-leg clash against SL Benfica.

Cameroon international goalkeeper Andre Onana started on the bench for Ajax, who had the tournament top scorer Sebastien Haller spearheading their attack.

The Dutch giants broke the deadlock towards the half-hour mark from a well-taken side-footed finish by Dusan Tadic.

Benfica were level within the matter of minutes after a supply from former Tottenham Hotspur man Jan Vertonghen saw Haller deflect the ball into his own net.

The Ivorian quickly went and redeemed himself when he attacked the near post to go and guide a surging delivery from Steven Berghuis past goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.

Benfica levelled for the second time through a smart finish from Ukrainian Roman Yaremchuk as the Dutch struggled to clear their lines.

The second leg of this encounter will be held in three weeks time in Amsterdam, with the tie firmly in the balance.
