Bayern Munich head coach Jupp Heynckes dismisses notion of Spanish curse in UEFA Champions League

Ahead of Bayern's first leg quarter-final tie at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, the German side have endured a nightmare spell against Spanish opposition which the home side can take confidence from.

Since winning the treble under the veteran German coach in the 2012/13 season, Die Roten have been eliminated by Real Madrid twice, FC Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

"In 2012, Bayern went to Real Madrid and knocked them out. The following season, with all due respect to Barcelona, who have played some of the greatest football in European history recently, we won 4-0 at home and 3-0 at Camp Nou," he told reporters, as quoted by AS.

"That simply shows that each year is different and the statistic of the last four seasons is irrelevant to this match.

"We have the utmost respect for Sevilla. They may not be as popular as some other teams still in the competition, but they are really strong."
