Lewandowski rescues victory for Barcelona

FC Barcelona left it late to see off Valencia 1-0 at the Mestalla and move top of LaLiga on Saturday evening.

After exiting the UEFA Champions League group stages for the second year running this week, Barca featured Robert Lewandowski, Ousmane Dembele and Ousmane Dembele up top.

Valencia were under pressure in the earlier stages and needed a superb point-blank save from Giorgio Mamardashvili to parry Fati's one-on-one attempt after a through ball by Pedri.

Gennaro Gattuso needed to make a change around the 20th minute when Edinson Cavani limped off the pitch and Marcos de Sousa came on for the former Manchester United man.

Barcelona did put the ball in the net around the midway point after Lewandowski and Pedri combined to set up Fati for a sliding finish, but the offside flag was raised and the effort didn't stand.

The Catalans were also required to make a forced change three minutes to halftime, with Eric Garcia withdrawn following a clash with Justin Kluivert and Marcos Alonso introduced.

Barcelona came close again a minute to halftime when Lewandowski jumped on the end of Jordi Alba's clipped delivery and headed against the foot of the post.

Los Che were renewed following the second half and were ahead after Samuel Lino latched onto a cross from deep to stab home, but after a review it was ruled out following a hand-ball.

Three additions from the bench by Barca moments apart saw Gavi in for Sergio Busquets before Fati made way for Raphinha and Ferran Torres entered for Dembele.

Valencia were struggling to find runners in behind the Barca defence, and nearly went behind from a low ball in the area later on but Torres was unable to connect.

The Blaugrana eventually surged ahead in stoppage time as Lewandowski stretched on the end of Raphinha's floating ball to poke home and handed the visitors all the points as the match concluded.
