Roy Hodgson on SAFA shortlist for South Africa Bafana Bafana coach

Contact has been made with the 69-year-old about the possibility of leading South Africa as the search for a replacement for Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba gathers pace.

SAFA are not going to make any decision until next month, high-placed sources have confirmed to this website, but the process of identifying possible candidates to interview is gathering pace.

This is all despite Mashaba’s mission to be reinstated.

SAFA have received many unsolicited CVs of coaches interested in the job and been contacted by agents offering other candidates but the selection process is likely to only concentrate on a handful of high-profile options.

Hodgson has extensive ties with South Africa, having played at Berea Park in 1973 in the old National Football League. He also coached the Mandela XI in a FIFA-organised charity match at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town in 2009 and is a regular visitor to the country for holidays.

He lacks a background in African football but offers South Africa a chance to send a strong signal of intent by making a high-profile appointment.

Hodgson’s modest playing career contrasts with a stellar coaching CV, including stints as the national team coach of the United Arab Emirates, Switzerland and Finland.

His previous clubs include Inter Milan, Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers and West Bromwich Albion before he became England boss in 2012, when he quit after their shock loss to Iceland at the Euro 2016 tournament in mid-year.

snl24.com/kickoff can also confirm that former Bafana coach Carlos Queiroz is definitely being considered, as has been previously reported. The Portuguese has also stated his interest in returning to the position he held between October 2000 and February 2002.
