African footballer killed over alleged phone theft

Tragic news has emerged from Kenya, where a professional footballer has reportedly lost his life in an incident of mob justice following allegations of phone theft.

According to Daily Nation, Eric Wafula, a former player for Kenyan National Super League side Mathare FC, was killed over the weekend in Nairobi alongside a friend.

The two were allegedly attacked by members of the public shortly after reportedly snatching a phone from a pedestrian.

The said news publication has indicated that the community used stones and heavy sticks to attack the two men until they lost their lives on the spot.

The report further revealed that this was not Wafula’s first encounter with such danger. He had previously been rescued by police officers from a similar mob incident in Kariobangi, also linked to alleged phone theft.

Mathare FC confirmed Wafula’s passing in a brief statement, mourning the loss of their former player.

"We are saddened by the passing of our former goalkeeper Eric Wafula. Shine on your way Jagoal. Rest in Peace," FKF New Mathare FC said, per Daily Nation.

More so, a police officer in Nairobi has also commented on the incident.

"The fame that came with his talent saved his life on several occasions," said an officer at John Saga Police Station, per the above mentioned publication.

"All I can say is he was a talented goalkeeper, It is sad that his life was to end in such a manner."
