Angola top Group D, Mauritania send Algeria packing

Mauritania 1-0 Algeria

2019 champions Algeria crashed out of the Africa Cup of Nations after a shock 1-0 defeat to Mauritania in the last game of Group D.

The Desert Foxes dropped the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Sofiane Feghouli, Youcef Belaili and Nabil Bentaleb, as they searched for their first victory.

After a tentative start, Yali Dellahi eventually broke the deadlock for Mauritania eight minutes before the interval with a strike from a rebound in the box.

Djamel Belmadi finally brought on Mahrez at half-time in place of Houssem Aouar to try turn things around.

Algeria were struggling to build momentum and only came close to equalising on 73 minutes after Aissa Mandi was denied by goalkeeper Babacar Niasse from a big chance unmarked at the back post.

Mauritania were dangerous on counter-attacks and Pape Ibnou Ba almost sealed the win four minutes before time with a strike that came off the crossbar.

In the end, the Desert Foxes lost and crashed out of the tournament after finishing bottom of Group D with two points.

Mauritania, who won their first game at the AFCON, qualified for the last 16 as one of the best third-placed teams, after finishing with three points.

Angola 2-0 Burkina Faso

Angola finished at the top of Group D after beating Burkina Faso 2-0 in the last round-robin encounter.

Burkina Faso created good chances in the early stages but were clinical, as Mabululu sent Angola ahead nine minutes before the interval with a header from a corner.

The Stallions were spirited from the break and Dango Ouattara had a big chance on the hour-mark but was denied by goalkeeper Neblu.

Zini eventually sealed the three points for Pedro Goncalves' men in stoppage time with a strike from a rebound.

The Southern African side topped Group D with seven points en route to the last 16 and Burkina Faso also qualified for the knockout stages after finishing in second place in the group with four points.
