Equatorial Guinea thrash toothless Ivory Coast

Equatorial Guinea 4-0 Ivory Coast

Equatorial Guinea booked their spot in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations with a 4-0 thrashing of hosts Ivory Coast, who finished third in Group A.

The Elephants were still without Sebastien Haller, as they made four changes from their defeat against Nigeria, with Willy Boly, Wilfried Singo, Nicolas Pepe and Oumar Diakite all getting the nod.

Emilio Nsue broke the deadlock for Equatorial Guinea just before the break with a strike in the box after he was teed up by Carlos Akapo.

Ivory Coast thought they had found the equaliser on the stroke of half-time after Ibrahim Sangare headed home a cross by Christian Kouame.

However, the goal was disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for offside.

Jean-Philippe Krasso found the back of the net forthe Elephants on 67 minutes with a diagonal shot that went in off the post but the goal was also chalked off by the VAR for marginal offside.

Pablo Ganet doubled the lead for Nzalang Nacional 17 minutes before time with a rocket from range.

Ivory Coast committed numbers going forward and Nsue made it 3-0 for EQG three minutes later, completed his brace and got his fifth goal of the tournament from a one-on-one chance.

Things went from bad to worse for the West African giants, as Jannick Buyla made it 4-0 for Equatorial Guinea in the last two minutes.

Nzalang Nacional went through to the round of 16 after finishing top of the group while the host country will have to wait for other group games to complete in the hope of qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams, after they finished third with three points.

Guinea Bissau 0-1 Nigeria

Nigeria went through to the last 16 after edging Guinea Bissau 1-0 in their final game of Group A.

The Super Eagles made four changes following their win against Cote d'Ivoire, as Kenneth Omeruo, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Moses Simon and Joe Aribo were all brought in.

Nigeria went ahead nine minutes before the interval thanks to an own goal by Opa Sangante, who could not clear a cross.

The Super Eagles had two goals disallowed for offside in the second stanza but had done enough to secure their second win and qualified for the last 16 in second place in the group.

Guinea Bissau lost all their games and crashed out of the tournament.
