Soweto Derby cup hero: Sthembiso Ngcobo

As they prepare to lock horns for the second time in less than a month, after their Absa Premiership meeting ended in Pirates’ favour, snl24.com/kickoff takes you down memory lane by looking back at cup competition heroes from both sides in the PSL era.

This time we look at former Amakhosi striker Sthembiso Ngcobo, who lit up FNB Stadium when the Naturena outfit hammered the Buccaneers in the Telkom Knockout final.

Venue: FNB Stadium

Result: Chiefs 3 Pirates 0

Hero: Sthembiso Ngcobo

Former Free State Stars striker Sthembiso Ngcobo did not have the greatest of times at Chiefs, but the night Amakhosi beat Pirates 3-0 in a knockout competition final eight years ago will no doubt live long in his memory. Ngcobo bagged a brace as Amakhosi outclassed their rivals in front of packed FNB Stadium crowd.

The man known as ‘Mapholoba’ scored his first goal in the 11th minute, following an error at the back from Pirates. He completed his brace just after the hour mark when he got his head onto a delightful cross from left-back Punch Masenamela.

Siphiwe Tshabalala scored Chiefs’ third in the final 20 minutes to hand Amakhosi the title.
