Soweto Derby cup hero: Kenny Niemach

As they prepare to lock horns for the second time in less than a month, after their Absa Premiership meeting ended in Pirates’ favour, snl24.com/kickoff takes you down memory lane by looking back at cup competition heroes from both sides in the PSL era.

Today we start this feature by looking at a man who broke Pirates hearts in a BP Top 8 semi-final clash in the early 2000s, Kenny Niemach.

BP Top 8 semi-final 2001
Venue: FNB Stadium
Result: Chiefs 1 Pirates 0
Hero: Kenny Niemach

If you think scoring on debut for a club like Chiefs is massive, then imagine scoring in your first game against Amakhosi's biggest rivals Pirates. Big striker Kenny Niemach was given the nod in the starting line-up in a semi-final clash and he did not disappoint, scoring with a powerful header after Arthur Zwane put in a good cross in the 34th minute.

News about Niemach's signing was kept secret leading up to the game and he no doubt sprung a surprise on the Buccaneers, who did not plan to face the former Mamelodi Sundowns forward in the clash.
