While many coaches and players will probably say they prepare for it like any other game, there's always something different about Derby week.
Players change hairstyles, some arrive at training earlier than usual, bets are made and others avoid being tackled by the defenders in training.
There's always a funny or interesting story to tell about Derby week, so snl24.com/kickoff has tracked down a few former players from both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
"The preparations for this game have changed now because of democracy," says 'Magents'.
"During our time the Derby started like from the first day of the month. We would start preparing for it from the first of the month. We would use the other two or three games in between as our preparations for the Derby. We used them for the big one. Even supporters would start wearing their uniforms from day one up until the day of the Derby.
"I would speak to Gardner (Chiefs left-back Rudolf Seale), but mostly with the late 'Banda' (Thabang Lebese). I loved to put him off like a day before the game. I would phone him even when he was sleeping and tell him tomorrow I'm done with you. Once we were queuing in the the tunnel I would send 'Shoes' (Bernard Lushozi) to stand next to him. Shoes would say to him 'Uyabona wena [You see you], you won't finish this game ngikutshela manje[I tell you now]'. At that time Innocent Mncwango would be busy with Doctor (Khumalo).
"We used to make the Derby interesting. We used to do simple hairstyles which were s-curl and perm. Chiefs players used to do perms and pour a lot of oil on their heads, while thina besishaya [we would do] ama s-curls and bee bobs. On a Friday we would go to a certain young man called Chaka in Soweto to do our hair. We would fill up his salon. Sometimes we would go to Small Street, there was a salon there. Even before the game we would fight over a mirror in the change room to make we look good."
