Joy at last for Downs discard

Erwin Saavedra has needed just under three months to do what he failed to do during the two years that he was at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Saavedra had it difficult at Sundowns after arriving in January 2022 from Bolivar La Paz as a regular in the Bolivian national team.

His transfer was reportedly worth approximately R15 million.

The 28-year-old played only 10 games (totalling 265 minutes) for The Brazilians throughout those two years, during which he was a regular in the medical rooms.

That catalogue of injury mishaps meant his last appearance was in April 2023, following which he wasn't registered for the current season.

He would have been the sixth South American at the after Marcelo Allende (Chile), Junior Mendieta and Matias Esquivel (Argentina), Lucas Ribeiro Costa (Brazil), and Gaston Sirino (Uruguay).

From the horror of his time at Sundowns, Saavedra has now been on a resuscitation mission since moving back to Bolivar in February.

In under three months, he has played nine games with a total of 559 minutes, which is over double the amount of game-time he got at Sundowns.

Saavedra has played in the Copa Libertadores (South America's equivalent of the Champions League) with Bolivar top of Group E ahead of Brazilian giants Flamengo.

He has also had minutes on the domestic scene, where Bolivar sit top of the Bolivian Division Professional Clausura.

The big question is now around whether he has done enough to be considered for the Bolivian national team squad to play at 2024 Copa America.

Antonio Carlos Zago will in the next couple of days make public his selection of 55 players for the tournament.
