Khanya Leshabela could be set to make a return to Premier League side Leicester City in January after struggling to make an impact during his latest loan spell away from the club.
Former South Africa U-20 international Khanya Leshabela joined English League Two (fourth division) side Crewe Alexandra on loan from Leicester at the start of the season but has been limited to just two starts in the league this season, and just 560 minutes of action across his 13 appearances in all competitions.
The 23-year-old midfielder is one of a number of players whose loan deal with Crewe is set to expire in January and club boss Lee Bell has confirmed that, while he remains in the reckoning for selection, contingency's are being put in place for his possible return to the Foxes.
"Khanya has not had a lot of game time, he's probably had less than he would have hoped," Bell told the club's website. "You know, I have to pick a squad for the match day, and he played well for the U-21 recently so he will be back in the reckoning to be back in the squad on Saturday.
"I was pleased with his performance and his attitude in the game, along with some of the others, so he is just in the reckoning and fighting for a place in the squad."
"We're making plans for both scenarios. Their loans do actually run out in January so we've got discussions with their clubs and with the players, but we are making plans behind the scenes in terms of if they are going to stay or if they are not going to be with us.
"We're hopeful those discussions can develop quite quickly and we can come to a conclusion with that."
Leshabela made his Premier League debut with Leicester as a substitute during the 5-0 win over Sheffield United in March 2021 but has not featured for the club since, instead spending the last season and a half across loan spells with League One side Shrewsbury Town and Crewe.
The Soshanguve-born midfielder penned a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Foxes back in 2019 which is set to expire at the 2022/23 season, meaning he could be on the move again at the end of the campaign.
