Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Siphiwe Tshabalala has recounted the momentous goal he scored as millions witnessed history on this day 10 years ago.
Today, 11 June, marks a decade since the first ever FIFA World Cup tournament kicked off on African soil, with hosts South Africa having faced Mexico at FNB Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg.

Tshabalala went darting down the left flank after a silky bit of play between Aaron Mokoena, who stole the ball ahead of Giovanni Dos Santos to pick out Reneilwe Letsholonyane ahead of him.
'Yeye' then found Kagisho Dikgacoi, who played a neat one-two with Katlego Mphela before picking out Shabba's run with a well-placed through-pass. The rest is history.
"June 11 – I was nervous, like any other game. Even when we had to play a friendly game I would still get nervous, but I was really touched and inspired by the crowd and the [level of] support," 'Shabba' recalled during an interview with SAFJA.

"I still remember the moment I sang the national anthem, I sang it with pride and teary eyes as well, and I was very positive and knew I was going to do well because I visualise all the time - I dream; I plan; I execute my plan; I dominate and then repeat again.
"So, it was no different from that [process]. Obviously it was a big stage, the whole world was watching, and one had to bring his A-game. So, the goal didn't just come by fluke.
"Mexico were in possession of the ball, we were well organised and everyone was back in our half, and I think Aaron intercepted the ball and it changed hands [sic] from Kagisho to Yeye and Katlego as well.

"It was a perfect transition; a perfect run, the weight on the ball and the speed from KG was perfect; my first touch was good, and then I also felt it when the ball left my boot that it was definitely going to go in.
"And the celebration should also tell you that it came out from confidence that we knew we were going to score. The celebration was well prepared – everything great, so it was a perfect goal."
