Throwback Thursday: Peter Gordon

In this week's Throwback Thursday Wits University legendary defender Peter Gordon reveals how Witbank Black Aces supporters got him fired from the club.

Following the resistance of him signing for Witbank Black Aces by fans, Gordon - who these days works as an electrician in Johannesburg - had to transfer to Wits, which is where he carved out a name for himself.

"Terry Paine spotted me and when he decided to stay in the country he said come with me I'm going to Black Aces," Gordon tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"That was at the beginning of 1986 so there was still quite a lot going on politically. I was there for about six months. I was selected to play against Rangers, but then I got threatened.

"Terry came into the changing room and said that they can't guarantee my safety. I was based in Witbank, Lynville during that time.

"The fans were not happy that I was selected ahead of their favourite player on that day. I can't remember his name.

"So the club said no we can't guarantee your safety. Junior Ngobe was there, Cyprian Maimane was there. I said you guys should just hand me my clearance and allow me to leave the team as you can't guarantee my safety.

"And they released me to Wits, although they begged me to return afterwards, but it was too late.

"My first salary at Wits was about R500 a month at Wits, it was R750 or something. That was in 1986. I only played for Black Aces and Wits."
